I was especially excited to see this episode of American Idol given the fact that this city, Birmingham, has given us some very memorable characters like Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, and Reuben Studdard. That's 2 of 5 American Idol winners! Now, I'm beginning to think that American Idol has extracted most of the talent it's going to find in the deep south for quite a while! Out of the 11,000 who showed up to audition, only 20 were passed through to Hollywood.
One of the first "characters" of this show to catch my attention was newlywed Katie Bernard - the girl who talks like Minnie Mouse! Wow. Her speaking voice is CrAzY! I did NOT expect her to be able to carry a tune at all! And while I don't expect her to make it very far in the competition, it'll be interesting to see just how far she can take it. I mean, Paris Bennet made it far last season with a comparable voice!
Up next was Tatiana McConnico who was a 17 year old with a power voice good enough to make it through to the next round singing Aretha Franklin - you go, girl!
The next contestant to really catch my attention was Bernard Williams. This guy had the nerve to cover a Michael Jackson song ("Rock With You") and actually pull it off! Amazing! I think it shows mad skill to attempt and succeed in this feat! I'm anxious to see what other styles he can pull off!
And then there was the 50 year old Tweety Bird! Holy Cow, man! I'm not really sure what she sang, but frankly, her voice is NOT what caught my attention! Seriously, what was this lady THINKING?
I guess the south didn't produce many contestants this year, but it definitely left us with some unforgettable characters!
